For Social Media in the Classroom to Work, Instructors Need Best Practices
As I prepare to teach two hybrid courses next year, the title of this article caught my attention. I intend on using various social media sources--Google +, Twitter, YouTube to name a few--with my hybrid English 10 and American History courses. This article focused on university students in various English classes; it suggested that while some loved social media, others hated it. I tend to wonder if this will be different in high school? I also worry about tweeting my students...am I breaking any rules? This is something I'm going to have to examine carefully prior to the fall!
I would definatly check with your schools Director of Technology (or whoever is in charge of that type of thing) and see what your useage policy is. I can't use YouTube or schooltube at school becuase it is blocked to the students. At my school also we are not allowed to create student email accounts becuase of the fear of cyberbullying etc.
ReplyDeleteWell, that is partially the beauty of the hybrid courses...students will be participating in these courses via Blackboard, much like we do here :) Furthermore, the days that they are IN school, they will NOT be using the computers. So, I don't think that school usage policy comes into play. Parents and students will be signing contracts about what is/is not acceptable usage specifially for the hybrid courses.
